Professor Chan is the Director of Liver Transplant Center at Queen Mary Hospital and Chief of Liver Transplant at the Division of Liver Transplant, Hepatobiliary and Pancreatic Surgery. 

Professor Chan is specialized in living donor liver transplantation, and the surgical management of liver, pancreatic and biliary cancer. He is an expert in advanced liver surgery, and is renowned for integrating transplant knowledge and operative techniques into surgical resection of advanced cancer. He is internationally recognized for his pioneering work in Associating Liver Partition and Portal Vein Ligation for Staged Hepatectomy (ALPPS). He performed the world-first pediatric ALPPS for hepatoblastoma in 2013, and has accrued one of the largest personal experience in ALPPS for hepatocellular carcinoma. 

Professor Chan was the President for Asian Surgical Association (2015-2017), and Chairman of Vanguard Committee at International Liver Transplant Society (ILTS, 2019-2021). He was the founding member for International Laparoscopic Liver Society (ILLS). He also served in various committees at International Hepato-Pancreato-Biliary Association (IHPBA) and Asia-Pacific Hepato-Pancreato-Biliary Association (A-PHPBA) including Scientific Committee, Education and Training Committee, and Publication and Communication Committee. 


Professor Chan was awarded the Dr. Abdol and Mrs. Joan Islami International Guest Scholars by the American College of Surgeons in 2018, and the GB Ong Travelling Fellowship in 2014. He has authored 6 book chapters and published over 300 peer-reviewed articles in high impact journals including Lancet Oncology, Lancet Gastroenterology and Hepatology and Annals of Surgery. He is currently the editorial board member of Annals of Surgery, and Hepatobiliary and Surgical Nutrition.
